The Penguin Syndicate XVII is here!
    https://community.playstarbound.com/threads/137284/

The Penguin Syndicate is a strategic roleplay game based on the well-known game of Forum Mafia.
In this Starbound-themed variation players are divided into Civilians, Penguins and various other groups.
Play all the tricks and mind-games you have; scheme and deduct your way into victory.
    The last team alive wins!

Welcome to the Penguin Syndicate! This is the main thread for the game series, and meant for everything that is unrelated to specific games. This is the place for discussion of roles, setups and future games, game-related announcements, and general talk.
This thread also contains the rules, the roles, and collected information of the past games.

Anyone is free to talk here; you don't have to be a player. If you're interested in playing, say so in this thread, or sign up to a game that is currently accepting players. Ongoing games do not usually take in players, except in special cases such as replacing a leaving one.

This is a short explanation of the gameplay for new players.

    There are two main alignments:
The Civilians, which consists of the majority of the players. Usually a Civilian knows only their own role.
The Penguins, who usually are around 20-30% of the players. They can talk privately at any time and know each others' roles.
Along with these there may be special roles that have their own goals. More about them further down.
After the signups end, the players will be randomly given a alignment and a role.

The game consists of a repeating cycle of Days and Nights. Note that both usually last longer than a real life day.

The game starts with a Day. During one, the players vote off (aka Lynch) a single player. Each of the players has one vote. The Civilians discuss and vote on who they believe to be a Penguin. The Penguins' goal is to hide amongst the players and mislead the Penguin hunt.
The Day ends when a player has the majority of the votes, or when a set deadline is passed. The player with the most votes will be removed from the game and their role will be publicly announced.

After the day ends, the game will enter a Night. During this phase, talking about the game in the game thread is prohibited. In private conversations, the players with a night-action role (e.g. investigating or protecting other players) will inform the GM (aka me) of their target players. Night is also the time when the Penguins perform their Nightkill, and eliminate a single player of their choice from the game.
The Night ends when the set deadline is passed, or when all night actions have been reported. The dead players and their roles will be publicly announced and the next Day will begin.

This cycle will be repeated until only one winning team remains. Both alive and dead members of that team win. Theirs is the glory.

Obey these rules. If something is not included in these roles and you're unsure whether or not you're allowed to do something, don't do it. Use some common sense, or ask the GM for help.

Obey at all times. Any resistance is futile.
    • All game talk happens in the game thread (and related PMs).
      • Do not reveal your role to anyone privately.
      • Don't post any undeniable proof of your role, such as images. Claiming to be a specific role is allowed.
      • After you are eliminated, don't post anything game-related in this thread.
    • When you vote a player, make absolutely clear who you are voting.
      • Example vote: Vote: Zebe
      • When voting for no lynch (nobody dies that day), do it as follows: Vote: No Lynch
      • When resetting your vote to nothing, do it either: Vote: None or Vote: No vote
    • If no player has gotten the majority of the votes before the Day deadline, the player with the most votes will be lynched.
      • If there is a tie, there will be no lynch
    • You can't choose yourself as a target for your night action, unless specified otherwise in the role description.
      • Stargazer Priests can target themselves, given that there are at least two of them. However, the targetted Stargazer does no action, and the action is performed by other Priests
    • The game can end in a Victory, Stalemate, or a Total Loss.
      • Victory is when any main faction reaches their objective of being the last surviving one.
      • Stalemate is when two or more factions are incapable of eliminating each other in ideal play. The situation can change, if a faction chooses to surrender.
      • Total Loss is when no faction is able reach a victory.
      • Alpaca's Victory or Loss has no effect on the outcome of the whole game
    • You are allowed to submit "Wills" to your Role PM conversation. These wills are posted to the game thread after you die.
      • They can contain any game-related information.
      • You can only submit Wills during Days and before your death.
      • Exception: Wills that contain no game-related information are accepted at any time before you die.
    • Have some fun.

Here are all existing roles. You can ask questions about the functionality of the roles at any time, even during a game.

    Boring Human

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote.

Sometimes luck isn't with you. We all know you wanted to be born as a cool alien with all sorts of special powers. It just wasn't your day. Still, you have your brains with you. Keep them safe. You can still outsmart them all. Become the greatest detective and show those Penguins who is the boring one!

    Miniknog Interrogator

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. Every night, you can choose one player and find out their side.

As a slightly immoral Apex scientist you have the means to catch anyone and persuade them to tell their purpose and alignment. Those years studying finally pay off. That doctorate of Mad Sciences serves you well here.

    Conspiracist

You are unable to perform normal investigations. You can find out if your target has any allies.

It's all connected somehow. Has to be. Must be. Needs to be. Will be. With more aggressive interrogation methods, you can find out many different things.

    Noble Hylotl

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. Every night, you can choose one player to protect from all harm.

Everyone knows the Hylotl are peaceful. But somehow you just radiate pure peace and love. Nobody can attack anyone you're protecting. It's not a made up thing. Maybe it has something to do with your diplomacy or those martial arts you have mastered. Of course it might just be because nobody wants to get near your arrogant self.

    Defender

If someone attempts to kill your target, you die istead of them.

You are proud, but not arrogant. You have virtuously devoted yourself to your mission. You will finish it, no matter what it takes.

    Floran Hunter

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. Every night, you can choose one player to trap and cancel all their night actions. This also protects the chosen player.

All you've ever known is stab. Stab stab. Stab. Somewhere out there is someone you must stab. The Penguins are loose. Catch 'em, stab 'em, and stab 'em again for good measure. Your hunter skills come useful in building traps which will keep the trapped out of all stabbing for the night.

    Star Sheriff

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. Every night, you can choose one player and find out what they were doing.

You are a lone star. The ranger of the Wild Western Skies. You have saved a million lives and forgotten every single one of them. The sense of justice is rooted deep inside your plasmatic soul. Use your tracker skills to spy on the wrongdoers and find out who the culprit is. And make sure you don't forget it.

    Ranger

You cannot perform normal action investigations. You are able to detect actions other players perform on your target.

Your knowledge is far beyond a ordinary lawman.

    Sentinel

You cannot perform normal action investigations. You you are able to detect everyone who does actions on your target, but not what actions they do.

As the law of your town, you keep watch. And as you're an adamant officer of the law, every town is your town.

    Warden

You're able to know the latest action and who did it at any moment, but only once per a Day/Night cycle. (Does not reveal who was the target of the action)

The years spent on duty have trained your eyes and ears as keen as possible so you can ... hey wait, what eyes and ears!?

    Role idea by @zeskorion

    Glitch Knight

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. You survive one murder attempt.

Bravest of the brave. Affirmative. Yes, you. They don't call you a knight for no reason. There is exactly one reason and that is your armor. Admiring. It shines. Dissatisfied. It breaks after receiving a one single blow. Hopeful. That one time might be enough to save your life.

    Regal

You are not protected from murder attempts. No other actions have any effect on you.

Accidentally, you put on a wrong set of armor. It sure looks fancy, but it's too light to protect you from a killing attempt. Instead, it will block all other actions you're targeted with.

    Stargazer

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. You can talk with the other Stargazers privately any time.

Some bonds cannot be broken. Your lifelong devotion to the gods of the Aether has given you the divine ability to discern a true believer; someone you can trust. Bless the Sunborn. Kluex led you to another Stargazer. Or maybe it was the fact that the other Stargazers present are all Avians like you and are wearing religious charms. Who knows.

    Priest

You are able to protect any player with other Priests every night. If any Stargazer dies, you die with them.

You are bound to the spiritual life stronger than a normal believer.

    USCM Militant

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. Every night, you can choose someone to kill.

You've been trained to be the toughest of the tough. You're harder than nails. There are five hidden weapons inside your body. Outside, there's more than you can count. As veteran of countless conflicts, you've fought at the front lines on a hundred alien worlds. And if there's something you've learnt, it is to take action. Debate? Voting!? Bah! These primitive lifeforms wouldn't understand if you'd pull a gun out in the middle of the day. It's better to take no risks and wait for the darkness to fall...

    Loyalist

If you kill a Civilian, you die.

You want to make things right, and you have all the equipment to do so. Still, you know that if you make a wrong call and attack a friend, there will be no return... If you kill a Civilian, you die.

    Aggressor

You cannot perform nightkills. You are able to kill during the day.

On a second thought, why wait for the night to come? You could shoot someone during the day. Nobody would expect that! However, everyone will see that you did the kill.

    Role idea by @zeskorion

    Bomber

You cannot perform normal kills. You can use a bomb that will kill both you and your target at any time.

You're all out of guns. All you have is an explosive, but if you're going to use it, you're going to go down too. It'll be a sacrifice, but it'll surely be worth it.

    Role idea by @611

    Protectorate Compatriot

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. Every night, you can attempt copy an ability from another player. If succesful, you can use that ability freely. If you copy another ability, you will lose the previous one.

Humans are said to be very adaptable. As a official member of the great Terrene Protectorate, you are one of the most adaptable of them all. That ability is useful in the vast, dark universe... especially now, after you've failed to protect the Earth. Fighting cosmic horrors didn't turn out good, and now you're fighting penguins. Which isn't easy either, so better learn a few tricks from others.

    Role idea by @Arra

    Rookie

Instead of copying abilities, you are able to use the latest ability you've been targetted with

You may not be very observant, but you learn fast. You just have to see it yourself first..

    Grand Protector

You won't lose abilities after copying more.

As the highest-ranking member of the Protectorate, you just are better. No question. Just stay away from all graduation ceremonies, okay?

    Apex Scientist

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. Every night, you can give out a one-use ability to any player, but each type only once during a game. The abilities are nightkill, protection, role investigation and roleblock.

As a knowledgeable scientist and researcher, you have developed serums, substances and devices for many purposes. And in a time of crisis, it is your duty to support your comrades with a supply of these handy inventions your have with you at all times. Whether or not they want it. Surely they'll like being injected by dubious chemicals. After all, it is for science!

    Role idea by @611

    Mad

Instead of giving the abilities away, you use them yourself.

You've got all the toys you could ever need. And everyone around you is undoubtedly incompetent. Why not use them yourself and unleash the full potential or these creations?

    Simian Doctor

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. Every night, you can turn one Agaran into a Boring Human. If they are a Civilian, they will be roleblocked.

The modern medicine is wonderous indeed. The Apex have developed a cure to turn Agarans into Humans... no matter what species they originally were. Unethical, says the rest of the scientific community. But the Miniknog does not care. Nor do you, as long as you get a few more allies this way.

    Role idea by
    @Zetlin97

    Amphibian Augur

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. Every night, you can ask one question about the setup, to which the GM will answer. The question can only include one named role. Neither the question or the answer can mention or refer to any players.

Your heightened senses see the world in a way no-one else can. In your trance-like state the lies disappear and you see the truth with clarity. Obviously, no other race can do this. The nature speaks to you, and you speak to it. Perhaps, if you ask a question, the emptiness will whisper back an answer. Just be careful of how you word it...

    Role idea by @611

    Aquatic Ambassador

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. Every night, you can send an anonymous message to any player.

As an excellent diplomat, you understand interracial relations. Languages, traditions, manners, politics... you know it all better then the most. Probably better than anyone else, actually, since you are a Hylotl. You know the other races so well you know they just lack the finesse on a Hylotl can have. Your knowledge is useful here, where communication is limited by inferior species.

    Killer Plant

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. You will automatically kill anyone that targets you with any action, but only once.

You hear voices, whispers and screams. Horrible visions flash in your dreams. It would've been better not to use that drysap, but it's too late for regret now. Paranoid of every movement, you will attack everyone that gets close to you. The rage will disappear at some point... possibly if you get something or someone to vent it on.

    Role idea by @zeskorion

    Sly Lily

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. Every night, you can switch two players, so any action performed on one player affects the other one instead.

As a Floran, you can track you prey down unlike an other creature in this Universe. Hunting is in your nature. As such, you know how hunting works. By laying false tracks, tricking your opponents and using all your schemes, you can trick people to follow the wrong prey.

    Role idea by @611

    Novakid Bandit

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. Every night, you can steal a vote from someone and use it during the following day.

As a expert gunslinger and a feared rogue you have formed a worldview of your own. Everyone has a right to an opinion? Not a chance as long as you hold that revolver. They will surely agree with you on every matter when the barrel is pointed right at them. Use their utterly selfless desire to help you in your mission to show the penguins who's the biggest outlaw around.

    Role idea by @The Squid

    Cosmic Court

You are sided with the Civilians. You have two votes.

You're a gas-bag judge that has read the book of law. Too bad you don't remember any of it. But that can't stop you from serving justice! Your word holds twice the power compared to everyone else. You're the law, and everybody knows it.

    Condemner

You have one vote. Once in a game, you can choose the lynch victim and end the day.

Your is the law. If you see someone is guilty, they will face their final judgement.

    Glitch Glitch

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. All investigative role results will see you as a Penguin, or that you have killed someone.

ERROR. You do not function correctly. SYSTEM FAILURE. You are a Glitch with good intentions. RECORDS 101-200 MISSING. However, your behaviour is off. FUNCTION COULD NOT BE RESOLVED. You seem very, very guilty. UNABLE TO REBOOT. How unfortunate.

    Occultist-Bot

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. You can talk with the dead privately any time.

Pull out the cards, the crystal balls and the ouija boards, because you're a spirit specialist! Everything you've learned of the ghastly ghosts is now being put into a test because you're reaching far to the Beyond in hopes of invaluable clues. How's it possible? Nanomachines! Not even death can stop you! Well, unless you're dead yourself.

    Avian Scholar

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. At any time, you can anonymously write a report that will be posted at the beginning of the next day.

As a well-read intellectual, you know one way to foil the plans of the wrongful forces that threaten you; share your insights. Put your thoughts into words, and share them.

    Role idea by @zeskorion

    The Dove

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. You can ask the GM to reveal your innocence at any given moment.

You're a white Avian. That appearance is... convincing. If you ever scream "I'm innocent!", everyone will believe you. In fact, you truly are as pure as your feathers. Stand for life against death; stand for peace against war.

    Whisperer

Every night, you can choose a player to tell your role to. You are not able to declare your role publicly to everyone.

Even while you are the epitome of peace, it may not be wise to announce your total innocence to everyone.

    Role idea by
    @611

    Divine

If you die, you will be granted a second life. On the next morning after your death, you will be resurrected.

Not only are you innocent and pure, but you are the Chosen One as well.

    Role idea by @zeskorion

    Penguin

You are a Penguin. You have one vote. You can talk with the other Penguins privately any time. During the Night you choose a victim with your Penguin confederates.

There are the nice penguins. There are the mean penguins. And then there is you. A black-hearted creature fallen to the Dark Side. For you there is no thing called redemption. You either win or... no, there is no other option than to win for you. You are a Penguin.

    Tabloid

At any time, you can anonymously write a report that will be posted at the beginning of the next day.

Sometimes you need to tell the unsuspecting fools your version of the events. The good version. The correct version. A newspaper might do the job just right.

    Role idea by @zeskorion

    Spy

You're able to know the latest action and who did it at any moment, but only once per a Day/Night cycle. (Does not reveal who was the target of the action)

From the shadows you watch the events taking place, steepling your flippers. Anything there is, you'll be able to know it.

    Role idea by @zeskorion

    Persuader

Every night, you can steal a vote from someone and use it during the following day.

You crook. Nothing is evil enough for you. Your influence even extends to the day as you convince a victim to give their support to you, so you can use their vote to your own goals.

    Role idea by @The Squid

    Messenger

Every night, you can send an anonymous message to any player.

Silently, you send notes to the enemy. Spread rumors and suspicions. Lies and half-truths. Lead them to a wild goose chase when they should be chasing penguins.

    Protector

Every night, you can choose another penguin to protect from all harm.

Not all black-hearted creatures of the Dark Side are here to bring death and destruction. You support your Syndicate-associates via other means.

    Trooper

    You survive one murder attempt.

As an armored servant of the Syndicate, you have enough armor to survive a single murder attempt.

    Confounder

You can switch around the roles and actions of the players in all of the investigative role results. You can only use this ability twice.

You are here to make a mess. Your special talent of darkness is to confuse the enemy investigators.

    Role idea by @The Squid

    Penguin Illusionist

You are a Penguin. You have one vote. You can talk with the other Penguins privately any time. During the Night you choose a victim with your Penguin confederates. Every night, you can switch two players, so any action performed on one player affects the other one instead.

You might know what you're doing, but your foes certainly won't. Is your heart black and cold or white and warm? Are they investigating an Avian or an Alpaca? Are they trying to kill a foe or a friend? It's almost like magic... They fall into your tricks so easily...

    Penguin Gun

You are a Penguin. You have one vote. You can talk with the other Penguins privately any time. During the Night you choose a victim with your Penguin confederates. At any time during a Day, you can kill a player. Your name is announced as you make a kill.

As a hired gun serving the Syndicate, you don't need to oblige by their rules. Day does not limit you. Your black, cold heart isn't afraid of being seen. You do your dirty work in broad daylight, in front of everyone.

    Bomber

You are unable to perform normal kills. You can use a bomb that will kill both you and your target at any time.

No guns? No problem! You have a bomb, and you can set it off at any moment. However, the explosion will blow you up with your target. So better make that kill count.

    Role idea by @611

    Penguin Investigator

You are a Penguin. You have one vote. You can talk with the other Penguins privately any time. During the Night you choose a victim with your Penguin confederates. Every night, you can choose one player and find out their role.

As a practised investigator you know the dark side of the galaxy like your pockets. Now, the notorious Penguin Syndicate has hired you as their PI. Luckily, since nobody else hires you anyway - and that's for a good reason. That P in your title abbreviation does not stand for "private". That's right, you know the dark side perfectly well because you're one with it.

    Obscurantist

You are able to hide the role of your target, if they die. If successful, you will learn their role. If unsuccessful, you can try again.

You specialize in finding out the identities of people - dead people, to be exact. Being a hardy investigator yourself, you also know how to hide all evidence from others.

    Penguin Engineer

You are a Penguin. You have one vote. You can talk with the other Penguins privately any time. During the Night you choose a victim with your Penguin confederates. Every night, you can give out a one-use ability to any player, but each type only once during a game. The abilities are suicide (appears as nightkill), protection (doesn't work, and nullifies any protection the user may have for the night they use the ability), role investigation (result is a random role from another alignment) and roleblock (does not block Penguin actions).

Building the same mech suits from day to day? Are flamethrowers getting boring? Is your job simply uninteresting? Do you want to work in front lines of the Syndicate? Well now you can! Get your tools, because now your job is to provide your waddling companions high-quality tools... and give your worst failures to the enemy.

    Role idea by @611

    Dreadwing

You are a Penguin. You have one vote. You can talk with the other Penguins privately any time. During the Night you choose a victim with your Penguin confederates. Every night, you can choose one player to trap and cancel all their night actions.

There are the nice penguins. There are the mean penguins. There are the black-hearted creatures fallen to the Dark Side. All three shudder when your name is mentioned. There is no other like you. On the outside you might look black and white, but inside, you're pure darkness.

    The King Penguin

You are a Penguin. You have one vote. You can talk with the other Penguins privately any time. During the Night you choose a victim with your Penguin confederates. Any investigative roles have no effect on you; the results are the same as if you were a Boring Human.

You have a crown. And a comfy throne somewhere safe, where you can lead your evil Syndicate from. But sometimes lousy black-hearted goons and a poor Dreadwing aren't enough to finish a job. Those are the times you must step on the playing field yourself.

    Disguiser

If you are investigated or killed during the night, your role will be shown as the same as your target.

As the King, you do have skills that earned you that position. With the trusty old disguise kit of yours, you can assume the role of your target.

    Role idea by @Apathy Applied

    Master of Disguise

If you are investigated or killed at any point of the game, your role will be shown as the same as your previous target. By default, you are disguised as a Boring Human.

Your prowess as a Disguiser has earned you the title of a master. Therefore, you have become the king of the kings.

    Cultist

You are a Cultist. You work alone. You have one vote. Every night, you can choose someone to kill. You win when you're the only one left.

They're all heretics. All the fools you see cannot comprehend the true nature of this Universe. You serve powers higher and mightier than anyone has ever seen. Your lords must be satisfied. All must either bow or perish. Preferably perish.

    Enforcer

    You survive one murder attempt.

As a soldier serving the true order of this universe you must make the heathens believe, one way or another. The one way they die in is definitely the right one. The equipment your lords have given to you protect you from one murder attempt.

    Hidden

Any investigative roles have no effect on you; the results are the same as if you were a Boring Human.

Your dark views and eldritch overlords aren't widely accepted. Why make noise about the beliefs you'd get killed for? Your devotion remains a secret.

    Assassin

    Nothing can stop your kills.

You serve your masters by eliminating high-profile heretics who oppose your faith. Thus, your proficiency in killing is unheard of. Nothing can stop you from killing your targets with one attempt.

    Arsonist

You're unable to perform normal kills. Every night you can either douse one player or ignite, which will kill all doused players at once.

Burn the heathens! Dip them in gasoline, oil, erchius, or some other volatile liquid and let the flames consume them in the name of your lords.

    Role idea by @611

    Agaran

You are sided with other Agarans. You have one vote. Every night, you can choose someone to infect. The infected have a 50% chance to become Agarans. You win when all remaining players are Agarans.

Halhoom? Huh hoom. Nab plesta mesti, nab weepa. Shroomy chop chop! Hairthing, kissface, hoommeat, sillypeck, clankbeast, squishfish, shinybrand, waddlebeak; shroomy smashroom! Smashroom! Hal, hal, halhalhoom!

    Chieftain

During Night, you can protect any Agaran from investigative roles.

<Universal Translation error. Language not recognized. Attempting to parse.>

    Role idea by @Zetlin97

    Shadow

You are a Shadow. You work alone. Every night, you can either find out the role of a player (unlimited use), roleblock (unlimited use), protect yourself from all harm (two time use), or hide the roles of all players that die that night (one time use). You win when you're one of the two last players alive.

Far from the worlds of eternal night, survival is a struggle. Your true from is impossible to comprehend and your motivations are shrouded by darkness. Despite the many secrets, one thing is obvious: you can't fight them all. Patience is the key in your way to the victory. When there is only one left, nothing can stop your shadows.

    Role idea by @Zetlin97

    Poptop

You are a Poptop. You know all alignments in the game, and you must choose one to ally with before the second day begins. Your allies will be informed that you have sided with them. You cannot communicate privately with any of your allies. Every night, you can choose one player and find out their role. You win if your allies win or you're the last player alive.

You aren't sided with anyone. You're just a Poptop, hopping across the wilderness, singing songs, and eating more or less unsuspecting travellers. However, you could pick a side in this conflict of strange species. You could achieve great things with your newfound friends. But choose wisely, since you can choose only once...

    Adult

You cannot die. You're unable to investigate. If your allies die, you lose and are unable to affect the outcome of the game.

You are tough, but not exactly the most subtle of creatures. Better forget the investigating.

    Alpaca

You are an ...Alpaca? You work alone. You have one vote. You win when you are lynched. Your win does not effect the rest of the game. You lose if you're nightkilled or alive when the game ends.

You... you? What even are you? A llama? Where did this come from? Some error in the Universe, most likely. You should probably eradicate yourself. Maybe in the next life you'll be something worthwhile.

    Syndicate

You have an ally, and both of you aim to be lynched. If one of you is nightkilled, the other has the following day to be lynched or both of you lose. If one is lynched, the other will be able to survive one nightkill attempt.

The Alpaca Syndicate is something that shouldn't ever exist. Yet here it is. You better fix that quick.

An important-looking person wearing traditional detective attire steps in. "Greetings. I am Grand Inspector Zebe and I have some unfortunate news for you. Two members of the notorious Penguin Syndicate has infiltrated the Outpost. You seven are all suspects."

Nervous muttering can be heard. "Well, to be exact, you were suspects! I've solved the mystery and the identities of these heinous criminals are right here!" Zebe continues and pulls out an envelope. Crowd gasps dramatically.

"Yes, the answer to the mystery is right here in my hand. But before I reveal the ruthless outlaws, I give you an completely unnecessary speech for the sake of suspense!" You are probably thinking: 'but Inspector Zebe, that envelope looks extremely flammable and could be easily burned while you are speaking!' Think again, because I also have the answer inside my head as well. That is correct, the information is completely safe. I repeat: the information is completely sa-"

    Intro:

A small interplanetary cruise liner has stopped midway through its journey. The captain, all of the officers and the whole cabin crew have ended up dead. As a passenger of the liner, you wait patiently for any further information about this nerve-racking situation. Somehow, the cabin is feeling smaller and more claustrophobic than it did before the tragedy.

Fortunately, one of your fellow passengers has turned out to be a crime scene investigator. Investigator Zebe comes back from the flight deck to bring news to you and the 11 other passengers beside you.

“This was a tricky case, I admit,” says the investigator, “but I’ve discovered the truth. It appears the dreaded Penguin Syndicate has returned. Three of its members are aboard, in disguise amongst you!”
The passengers let a horrified gasp.

“And there is a Cultist on board as well!”
    Another horrified gasp.

Zebe chuckles at the terror of the passengers. “Don’t worry, the situation is in hand. I’ve discovered the identities of the criminals. The mystery has been solved. The culprits are…”
    Lights go off.
    Lights go on.

They never saw him again. If some passenger had looked out of a window, they would’ve noticed that inspector Zebe had gone on a spacewalk without any proper equipment.

Amidst the dark, empty space the 12 passengers had an unsolved mystery in their hands.

    Intro:

The cards were dealt. The players were ready. It was a perfectly normal game of poker at the galactic casino. You look at your hand; nothing to rejoice.
The dealer announces that the game has started. Before he can get another word out of his mouth, the lights go out.

A mere second later the lights come back on.

The room is filled with shocked exclamations, as for everyone's great surprise the dealer has vanished. The casino staff and guards rush in, and chaos ensues.
Someone suggests that everyone should go looking for the dealer. This idea is followed, and soon enough the dealer is found from a locked side room. He has been stabbed.
Taking his last breaths, he manages to utter "P-penguins... did this. Three players... are penguins..." before slumping down lifelessly.

Soon after this it's found out that the game pot - that consisted of millions of Pixels - has been stolen.
You and the thirteen other people present are contained. The casino has a reputation to protect; they refuse to contact authorities.
This case will remain within the casino, as will you until a resolution is found.

    The game is truly on.

Zebe, the dealer, wakes up with a gasp. "...and one is also a cultist," he says before finally dying.

Investigator Zebe comes back from the flight deck to bring news to you and the 17 other passengers beside you.

“This was a tricky case, I admit,” says the investigator, “but I’ve discovered the truth. It appears the dreaded Penguin Syndicate has returned for the fifth time. Four of its members are aboard, in disguise amongst you!”
The passengers let a horrified gasp.

“And there is a Cultist on board as well!”
    Another horrified gasp.

    “And an Agaran!”
    A little more high-pitched gasp.

    “And a Shadow!”
So high-pitched gasp that it hurts your ears.

    “And an... Alpaca?”
    A confused gasp?

Zebe chuckles at the terror of the passengers. “Don’t worry, the situation is in hand. I’ve discovered the identities of the criminals. The mystery has been solved. The culprits are…”

    Lights go off.
    Lights go on.

They never saw him again. If some passenger had looked out of a window, they would’ve noticed that inspector Zebe had gone on a spacewalk without any proper equipment.
Amidst the dark, empty space the 17 passengers had an unsolved mystery in their hands.

    Intro:

You are being held in custody. A horrible event has just taken place, and you can't quite understand what has happened.
All you know is that the galactic authorities have taken you and nine other suspects away from the crime scene into a secured room with several armed officers keeping watch.
You hear that the lead investigator will soon arrive.

The investigator walks in and gives an intense look at the suspects.
"Wasn't that a nasty little incident. Pity the cleanup crew," he sighs. "The Syndicate again, huh? Now, let's see which of you are midgets with flippers."
"Luckily, we have a single witness," the officer declares. A figure emerges from the shadows.
"Zebe, was it? You did see it all?" asks the investigator.

"I did! I sawed it all!" Zebe cries agitatedly. "There, they were the ones!" He exclaims and points at the suspects.
Before anyone can take a good look at who he is exactly pointing at, the lights go out.
Seconds later, the lights go back on.

Lifeless bodies of the officers and the investigators lay on the floor.
Zebe, however, is still alive. The witness shrugs and looks around, as if waiting for something.

    The lights go out again.
    The lights go on.

The witness is dead, and the horrible incident has only just begun.

    Intro:

You step out of a escape pod into a tropical rainforest.
The starship you were travelling on has just crash-landed on a far-off planet.
With 11 other survived passengers, you decide to examine the smoldering wreckage of the ship that landed close by.

A charred body is found holding a mostly-intact audio log recorder. You to listen to the latest log.
"This is chief security officer Zebe. The ship is going down and there's nothing that can be done to save it. This was sabotage. The culprits certainly made it to the escape pods in time."

"The damned lights have gone off again. I can't see a thing. I can't get out in time. If someone finds this message, know that there are penguins amongst the passengers. I repeat, there are p--." The recording ends in static.

Soon, you find a distress beacon with the other survivors and send a signal. Someone will surely come to rescue you.
But with such a menacing bunch of fellow passengers, how many will there be alive by the time the help arrives?

    Intro:

    A five-star hotel on a space station.
A luxurious resort among the stars.
This is where you have arrived.

You're in your room when it happens; you hear an explosion not far from you. The lights flicker on and off, the floor trembles, and alarms start blaring.
The evacuation begins. You can barely find your way through the hotel. Walls have collapsed and hallways have been blocked by rubble.
Finally, you reach the ruined hotel lobby to find only fifteen other survivors.
Soon it becomes clear that all airlocks, docking ports and escape pods were put out of commission by the explosion.
There is no way in or out.

A stern-looking person walks in and calls for attention.
"Greetings. I am operative Zebe. My colleague and I have been tracing members of the notorious Penguin Syndicate, who are behind this bombing.
"It would appear that they're still on this space station. I remind you, these are dangerous criminals. We must proceed with extreme cauti--"
Suddenly, the damaged floor under Zebe gives in, and the operative falls to his death.

    But that isn't the end.

Immediately afterwards, a much less intimidating person rushes in. Taking in the scene and realizing, she quickly composes herself. "Operative Alkane here. I and my... colleague... have determined that the explosion was caused by--"
"Yes, we know already! The Penguin Syndicate!" an impatient tourist interrupts. "So get to the point: where are they?"
"They're right here, in this room. But I've just figured out who they are!" the operative exclaims, oblivious to the warnings that people are beginning to shout at her. "They are--"
Suddenly, the chunk of building right above Alkane's head gives way and falls down on her, killing her instantly.

But that isn't the end either.
    It is just the beginning.

    Intro:

The Outpost is in lockdown. Galactic authorities have shut down the gates - no way in, no way out. You've been escorted to the main hall and find yourself with 10 other people.

This seems a bit too familiar. But something is different now.

You all are suspects of a terrible, terrible crime. An important-looking person was supposed to speak to you, but you were too late. Grand Inspector Zebe lies lifeless on the ground. You watch as he's put into a body bag and carried away.

Suddenly, the bag starts wiggling and the people that were handling it run away screaming, dropping it on the floor. "A-ha!" shouts the person scrambling out of the bag. "Not yet! I still have things to do! The notorious Penguin Syndicate tried to off me, but I'm stronger than that!"
Nervous muttering can be heard. "Don't worry! I solved the mystery ages ago! The identities of these heinous criminals safe in my mind! Also, I have an envelope!" Zebe continues and takes one from the body bag. The crowd stands there in silence.

"Yes, the answer to the mystery is right here, I know that. But you are probably thinking: 'but Inspector Zebe, that envelope looks extremely flammable and could be easily burned while you are speaking! And someone could try to kill you again, before you can reveal the penguins!' Well... if you do you're absolutely correct! But I came in prepared!" Zebe lifts the body bag and shakes it. Countless envelopes rain down from it. Zebe looks the envelopes around briefly, seeming very satisfied...

    Lights go off.
    Lights go on.

The lifeless body of Grand Inspector Zebe lies on the floor with a couple dozen jagged knifes in its back. All of the envelopes are gone. A small note is attached to the handle of one knife. It reads:

    'You know it's us.
    It's always us.
    The game is on.
    With love, The Penguin Syndicate.'

You had all been arrested in a raid
    Supposedly the syndicate was there.
    Sounds like they're here now.

Soon everyone is transported to the main block
There a living mannequin stands tall.

"This is good and bad. It means our suspicions were correct. Unfortunately it also means they are loose"
The crowd seems a bit worried

Few hours ago you boarded the famed Andromeda Express. This luxurious space-train travels across the galaxy.
So far, everything has been fine.

You and the rest of the eight passengers have been called to the dining car, where a person wearing trench coat and other clichéd detective gear is waiting for you. "Greetings. I'm Investigator Zebe and I've got some news for you. A group of fugitives has infiltrated this train."
The passengers gasp. "That's right. It looks like the dreaded Penguin Syndicate has returned. For an untrained eye it's impossible to distinguish these disguised crooks among a group of people."
The Investigator slowly glanches through the passengers. "But don't worry, I've already solved this case. I've got the scoundrels pinned down. Their names are..."

To everyone's complete surprise, the lights go off.

And when the lights come back on, the Investigator has been stabbed with several knives, and promptly ejected into space.
But the case isn't closed. Will the passengers solve the mystery? Or will the nefarious criminals emerge victorius?

    Intro:

Your first few days at the obscure holiday resort on a distand world has been peaceful. So peaceful, in fact, you wish something exciting would happen.
The most thrilling activities you've found are sipping oculemon cocktails, initiating staring contests with the eyeball trees, and playing trite party games with the other guests.
The others don't even know how to really play, in your opinion. You lost because of bad luck, definitely.

What happened next certainly was welcome, although shocking.
The galactic authorities had arrived, launching an assult on the holiday resort.
In fact, the resort was a Pixel laundering scheme built by the notorious Penguin Syndicate.

The authorities quickly gathered you and the 10 other guests together. They knew there were Penguins among you. Two of them, in fact.
The Grand Inspector would've know who of them were the feathery frauds, but unfortunately Inspector Zebe was found floating from the pool, very much dead.
There was no doubt. The Syndicate was behind this. And now you're locked at the resort with a very suspicious bunch.

Now THIS is a game worth playing.

Aquatic Ambassador voiditect sends a message to HunterC1998. The message reads:

    The Penguin Games

    Mod: @Miss Alkane

    Intro:

You find yourself in a darkened stone room, light provided only by a few dim Glitch-style wall sconces. It reminds you of a dungeon. You have no idea how you got there, but around you are a few other people. Some of them, you may recognize as well-known Penguin hunters. Others are unfamiliar to you.

The speaker in the corner of the room switches on. A distinctly Floran, yet intelligible, voice emanates from it.

"I welcome all of you to the very first Penguin Games!"

A gasp. "Cuda," someone hisses. Others are as confused by that name as by the announcement.

"My name is Cuda Berrybane, and I'll be your host!" The speaker emits a burst of feedback, making everyone cover their ears... or equivalent organs. "Heheh... Sorry about that. Okay, let Cuda start over. This is the Penguin Games, invented by yours truly. The aim of the game is to kill all the Penguin Syndicate members among you, before they kill you. For you Penguin Syndicate scum...jusst try to sssurvive."

The speaker goes silent for a moment, and then you hear a fainter version of the same voice. "What do you mean, I should tell them how many there are? Are you crazy?! That would ruin the fun! ...All right, fine." She returns to the microphone. "Cricket says I have to tell you the number of Penguin Syndicate people. So here we go: it's two. But..." she breaks into hissing laughter, "not all of the people you need to get rid of are Penguinss!"

    Players & Roles:

Boring Human Apathy Applied (Sinead Alderman)
    Boring Novakid Dragonclaw (Oxane Jet)
    Interrogator zeskorion (Private Blueburn)
    Noble Peacheon (Lord/Lady Cogstop)
    Hunter CjBeats (Jess Tallin)
    Knight Dras (Tlixotl)
    Penguin HunterC1998 (Red Myrnovich)
    Dreadwing Zebe (Slippery Mihoto)
    Cultist 611 (Pattan Vinesplitter)

    Role PMs:

    Your name is Sinead Alderman.
You're a Boring Human: although you're a proficient computer hacker, your skills seem to be unfortunately useless here.
The player called "CjBeats" is a Human, too! And a former soldier, to boot. He can't possibly be a Penguin. But you'd rather not tell him what you do for a living.
    You have one vote.
May the Force be with you.

    Your name is Oxane Jet.
You are just a Boring Novakid. You don't have any special powers, but whatever! You can still get yourself outta this mess, even without them. Right?
    You have one vote.
    Good luck.

They call you Private Blueburn. That's obviously not your real name, though.
You are an Interrogator: a Novakid who's spent basically their whole life dispensing justice in their own personal way. That way may involve a bit of force, but you only do it to get the information you need.
You're fairly sure that the Penguin Syndicate aren't the only ones behind this. No, there's a Cultist among you as well. But you're not quite sure who it is.
You have one vote. Each night, you may choose one person and find out their alignment.
    Good luck, pardner.

Your name is Lord or Lady Cogstop. It's not entirely clear which to refer to you as.
You are a Noble: a high-ranking Glitch able to use their diplomatic powers to protect anyone else from actions taken in secret. You think this war is foolish. Why can't everyone just stop fighting?
You have one vote. Each night, you may choose one person to protect from all harm. That person will still be able to use their night actions, however.
    Choose wisely.

    Your name is Jess Tallin.
You are a Hunter: a Human former soldier whose specialty is protection. The question is... who needs to be protected, and who needs to be protected against?
The player called "Dras" is Tlixotl, an Avian warrior who's spent their life hunting down the Penguin Syndicate. They may be a useful ally.
You have one vote. Some people may know who you are. Each night, you may choose one person to trap. This person will be roleblocked and unable to use any night action, but will also be protected from other people's night actions.
    Choose wisely.

    Your name is Tlixotl.
You are a Knight: an Avian warrior who has spent their life hunting down the Penguin Syndicate, after seeing firsthand what they can do. You know their tricks. If they try to kill you, you'll be able to evade them... once.
You have one vote. Some people may know who you are. You are able to survive one nightkill, but if you are lynched, you're lynched.
    Kluex be with you.

They call you Red Myrnovich, but that is of course not your real name.
You are just a Penguin. Well, no, not exactly. You're an Apex who's joined the Penguin Syndicate for blood and money. The blood is why they call you Red. The money... hasn't really happened yet.
You have one vote. At night, you may meet with your Penguin comrade and together choose someone to kill.
For you, luck does not exist. So... just go kill some people.

They call you Slippery Mihoto, but that is of course not your real name.
You are a Dreadwing: a Hylotl who's risen up the ranks of the Penguin Syndicate surprisingly quickly. One of the tricks you've learned along the way was the ability to efficiently trap anyone you didn't like, rendering them completely helpless.
The player called "Dras" is Tlixotl, an Avian warrior who's spent their life hunting down the Penguin Syndicate. Be wary of them.
You have one vote. Each night, you may choose one person to trap. This person will be roleblocked and unable to use any night action, but will also be protected from other people's night actions. At night, you may also meet with your Penguin ally and together choose someone to kill.
    Choose wisely.

    Your name is Pattan Vinesplitter.
You are a Cultist: a cold-blooded Floran killer trained by Berrybane herself, assigned to this group of people for only one reason: to make them suffer. Please her, and she might even spare you from death. Displease her, and even if you survive, you'll wish you hadn't.
You have one vote and the ability to kill one person each night. You may be subject to roleblocking.
    Good luck.

    Intro:

You've all been invited to attend a banquet in an out-of-the-way stellar system, and for some reason or other, have accepted the invitation. Perhaps it's because you know Cricket, the civilized Floran who sent the invitation. Perhaps you thought it would be an adventure. Perhaps you know who Cricket associates with, and have come here to stop them once and for all...
But in any case, you're here now. The Glitch-inspired dining room is smaller than in a Glitch castle, but hardly less impressive. In the middle of one wall is a fireplace, filled with a roaring fire, and in the center of the room stands a long table covered in a sumptuous array of foods.

A small Floran hungrily tears into a roast chicken, while the young Hylotl eyes them nervously, yet still manages to eat with the precise grace characteristic of their race. A teal-colored Glitch converses with a tall, commanding Apex in between bites. Another Floran, this one covered in tribal markings, casually surveys the room, cutting up their food and eating without even looking down at their plate. The blonde Human sitting next to them is awed. The Novakid doesn't seem to know which fork to use, and leans over to ask the Avian beside them. The Avian doesn't know either, so the Novakid just shrugs and starts eating with their hands. A short and rather heavy Glitch takes a second helping of stuffed automatoes. The small Human and the short Apex, on the other hand, don't seem to be very hungry. They exchange glances every so often, but mostly stare at the double doors at the far end of the room. Where is Cricket? they wonder. So do most everyone else, but these two wonder most anxiously.

Finally, the question is answered. The large wooden doors swing open, and in walks a tall, reed-thin figure, made imposing by the three armored guards behind them.

"Welcome, friends... and enemies." The Floran's voice has only the slightest hint of a hiss. "You may have an idea of why I've gathered you here-"
"Actually, I don't know at all!" the Novakid interjects. The Hylotl snickers quietly at this interruption.

"...or you may not. Whatever the case may be, I will tell you now, straight out. You are here to play a game."

    "Oh, no..." someone mutters.

"Yes, that game. The game my dear friend Berrybane refers to as The Penguin Games. I see you've heard of it? Perhaps from that Apex Berrybane allowed to escape?" Cricket smiles darkly. "Oh yes, and that brings me to my announcement: Three of you - yes, the people gathered in this room - are Penguins. Only three. But due to the specific combinations of people I've chosen, it may not be a simple matter to figure out who they are. You may find your new acquaintances helpful. Or you may find them traitors. Good luck." With that, Cricket stands up and turns to leave.

A knife, thrown from the table, barely misses the Floran's head.

"How rude." They turn back around and fold their arms. "Killing me will not change the task you have to perform. In fact, it will make it more difficult for you, as Berrybane will have to take over for me. And Berrybane, you know, shows far less mercy than I." This time, the Floran is allowed to leave unmolested. The air in the room has drastically changed. Even those who were talking and eating freely before suddenly find themselves without an appetite. The small Floran is the only one who seems unconcerned, having finished their portion of meat and moved on to eating the garnish.

    Players & Roles:

    Noble (Defender) Arra (Sir Coppston)
    Hunter The Squid (Esster Bloodoak)
    Militant HunterC1998 (Alex Crane)
    Augur Apathy Applied (Hull Clockwist)
    Occultist zeskorion (Leuran Rohof)
    Dove (Divine) SpaceMonkeyRingo (Whitey)
    Penguin (Messenger) Dras (Ky Stardust)
Penguin Gun (Bomber) 611 (Halo Cryoxide)
The King Penguin Dragonclaw (Azell Dart)
    Cultist (Arsonist) CjBeats (Lazy Koisumi)
    Poptop (Adult) Zebe (Fern)

    Role PMs:

    Your name is Sir Coppston.
You are a Glitch Noble, one trained in the art of defense. Unfortunately, your defense only really works against medieval weapons, so you're really not sure you'll do well here. At least you'll be able to protect other people, even if you end up being damaged by their attacker. ...Even if you end up dying.
You have one vote. Each night, you may protect one other player from other night actions. However, if the night action is a nightkill, you die.

    Your name is Esster Bloodoak.
You are a Hunter, a Floran chosen specially for the task of hunting down and capturing criminals. Your tribe, the Tracktree, was named for their exceptional tracking methods, and you've learned them all. You've heard that, ironically, the base of the Penguin-hating Cuda Berrybane is a good place to look for the Penguin Syndicate... so when you received an invitation to that very base, of course you came!
You have one vote. Each night, you can trap one person. That person will not only be trapped but also protected from all other night actions.

    Your name is Alex Crane.
You are a human. Really not a trained soldier, but they call you a Militant anyway. Probably because of how outspoken you are against the Penguin Syndicate and corruption in general. That, and the fact that you're not half bad with a gun.
You have one vote. Each night, you may choose someone to kill.

    Your name is Hull Clockwist.
You are a Glitch who has taken on the role of Augur. Your silver tongue has brought you into favor with Cricket, and they've agreed to aid you by answering any questions you may have about the other people... with a few conditions.
You have one vote. Each night, you may ask one question about the setup of the game. The question can only include one named role. Neither the question or the answer can mention or refer to any players.

    Your name is Leuran Rohof.
You're an Occultist: an Apex with a very special gift you discovered in a faraway village, one misty evening, in an incense-scented room. You can speak with the dead, but only newly dead. Only those with the reason they wanted to live still burning in their soul. It's not scientific at all... it's just the way it is.
You have one vote. You will have access to the Dead PM and everything said in it, as well as the ability to relay any important information to the living.

Your name is Experiment DV-82, but your friends just call you Whitey.
You are an Apex with too-white fur, one of the results of an immortality experiment. Possibly the only surviving one. You don't know.
You have one vote. If you die, you will be resurrected on the next morning after your death. At least, that's how it's supposed to work...

Your name is Ky Stardust. That's really not your real name at all, but hey... it sounds cool.
You're an Avian specializing in messages and codes. You used this ability way back when to help rebel Grounded fight Stargazers... now you use it to help your Penguin friends trick and trap.
You have one vote. Every night, you may send one anonymous message to any player. Each night, you and your Penguin friends may choose one person to kill together.

Your name is... wait, what was it again? Oh right. Halo Cryoxide.
You're a Penguin Gun (Bomber): a Novakid who's somehow gotten tangled up in the Penguin Syndicate. You don't remember how. You can barely remember anything important. You're weird like that. All you remember is that the Penguins have to win.
It doesn't really matter what happens to you personally.
You have one vote. You cannot perform normal kills, but have a bomb that will kill both you and your target at any time. Each night, you and your Penguin friends may choose one person to kill together.

They call you Azell Dart. Is that your real name? Likely not. Does anyone care? Doubtful.
You're not the most obvious of characters. In fact, you could probably pass unnoticed for some time if you stayed quiet enough. No one would suspect that a small Human like yourself could be a King Penguin. But you are.
You have one vote. Each night, you and your Penguin friends may choose one person to kill together. If you are targeted by any investigative role, you will appear as a Boring Human.

You're known by many names. However, the one that you use most is Lazy Koisumi.
Your role is that of a Cultist (Arsonist). You're a Hylotl who hates the Penguin Syndicate just about as much as anybody. You never really thought about doing anything about it, though, until the accident. Now, you have a new name... or three... and a new mission. You have been chosen by Cracus to be His harbinger through fire.
But for some reason, everybody just sees you as a lazy little Hylotl. They don't understand. They never will. That's why you have to burn them all.
You have one vote. Each night, you may choose one person to douse, or you may choose to ignite, which will kill all doused persons.

    Your name is Fern.
Your role is that of an Adult Poptop. You are a Floran, rescued by Cricket from a small white room in a large white building. To you, this is just a game. Never mind that the stakes are literally life or death to the people around you. Which side will you choose? Will it be fun to join the Civilians? Will you enjoy being a Penguin? Or would you rather be... something else?
You have one vote. You must choose a side - Civilian, Penguin, or Special - before the second day begins. They'll be told that you're on their side, but you won't be able to talk privately with them. You cannot die, but if your allies die, you lose... so sad.

Answer: Technically, each race is proper to their own role, but that is because race barriers have been nearly completely removed in The Penguin Games. Intro:

Cricket stands by a table in the Outpost, conducting a last-minute test of the Human Syd Kilgore's knowledge. She's able to answer every question, and he grins despite his shaking, satisfied that she'll make a good game host.

Halo sits at the same table, absently ruffling Fern's leaves. Her gaze is focused on Cricket and Syd... she's not quite sure why.

Syd steps into the middle of the room and clears her throat. All eyes turn to her. "All right, everyone! It's time... for the very first Political Penguin Games!"

The pudgy Oscura is the first to get there, followed by a very short Human with clipped red hair. A dignified-looking Hylotl takes his seat across from Halo. A lanky Avian sits down and leans back in their chair, eyeing the rest boredly. A Glitch and another Hylotl join the party.

Then almost all eyes are drawn to the end of the table as the Phobe makes her entrance. She seems to be possessed of a mysterious charm that no one can ignore. As she sits down, she notices her audience and gives them a little half smile.

    Syd can't stop staring.

A tall Apex is the last player to join, after hurrying to finish his card game.

Seeing everyone's there, Syd takes a seat and produces a small stack of cards. "Fern, little one, could you help me with this? Yes, thank you. Just go around to everyone and give them their card. ...Oh, that's right, you don't know their names. Shall we have everyone introduce themselves?"

The dignified Hylotl is on Syd's left, so he goes first. "Silent Hikaru."

"Atlei," says the Avian, putting one clawed foot up on the table. "Just Atlei."

"I'm Jan Stray," the small Human announces.

"Ozcar Enwalde!" The Oscura looks like he's going to perform a theatrical bow, but doesn't, as his head would probably hit the table.

"Introductory. My na-name is Coiler Sparkplug." The Glitch stutters a bit, but seems unfazed.

"Luna Vercelli." The Phobe smiles again.

The Apex nearly forgets his turn. "Wha? Oh! Baryn Bartow."

"Graceful Yoko." This Hylotl winks at the other, who pretends not to have noticed.

    "Cricket."

    "Halo Cryoxide."

"And I'm Syd Kilgore," Syd finishes. "Can you remember all that, Fern?" Fern nods. "Great, thank you. Now go hand out the cards." She turns back to the table. "Your card will list your role and a description of it. Do not lose it... do not steal someone else's. If you do, I may have to remove you from the game."

"You should probably tell them how many Pen- ...I mean Orange Party members there are," Cricket says after a pause.

"Indeed I should! And there are three of those. (I promise, only three.) The goal of the Gold Party will be to get rid of all of them, as well as any other parties there may be. Now. Are you all ready? Good! Then let the games begin!"

Purple Party Investigator Dras (Baryn Bartow)

    Role PMs:

Your name is Atlei. Just Atlei. No last name.
You're a Gold Party Investigator. You have one vote. Every night, you can choose one player and find out their side.
What's this game? Looks easy for a seasoned trickster like you. Though you probably can't pull one over on the host. Syd knows your tricks backwards and forwards.
You might be able to manipulate the new guys, though. Halo and Cricket, were they? They look pretty fresh-faced and naive.

    Your name is Graceful Yoko.
You're a Gold Party Persuader. You have one vote. Every night, you can steal a vote from someone and use it during the following day.
You're not really sure why you joined this game. Probably thought it'd be a good way to meet new people. Well, maybe it will be, but you'll also have to play the game. And you mainly prefer dancing to strategy, so there's that. OH WAIT THERE'S ANOTHER HYLOTL YOU HAVEN'T SEEN BEFORE MAYBE YOU SHOULD TALK TO HIM.

    Welcome back, Halo Cryoxide.
You're a Gold Party Miller. You have one vote. The catch is: investigative roles see you as a member of the Orange Party.
You and Cricket met Syd Kilgore as you landed here, and she's treated you like great friends ever since. She created this game with Cricket's help, and insisted on hosting the test run.
Cricket seems to like her a lot.

    Your name is Jan Stray.
You're a Gold Party Publisher. You have one vote. At any time, you can anonymously write a report that will be posted at the beginning of the next day.
What a tiny thing you are. Nobody will take you seriously, you're sure, if you just state your opinion like a normal person. Good thing "Aunt Syd" provided you with an alternate method of communication... the only question is, will the others decide it can be trusted?

Your name is Luna Vercelli. You're a member of the race known as the Phobe...
And a member of the Gold Party - a Whisperer, to be exact. You have one vote. Every night, you can choose a player to tell your role to. You are not able to declare your role publicly to everyone.
You know your motives are pure. Unfortunately, not everyone is keen on trusting a Phobe like you. Perhaps it would be best to try to persuade them one at a time...

    Welcome back... Cricket.
You're an Orange Party Publisher. You have one vote. You can talk with the other party members privately any time. During the Night you choose a victim with your confederates. At any time, you can anonymously write a report that will be posted at the beginning of the next day.
You're used to giving overviews of the daily actions in a game. You're fairly sure that's why Syd gave you this role. She seems to like you. You're not sure what to do about that.

    Your name is Coiler Sparkplug.
You're an Orange Party Persuader. You have one vote. You can talk with the other party members privately any time. During the Night you choose a victim with your confederates. Every night, you can steal a vote from someone and use it during the following day.
You're not a politician, you're a mechanic! But you're not going to let that stop you from winning. Assuming you know what you got yourself into.

Welcome back, Hylotl. Your name is a little different now - Silent Hikaru, they call you.
You're an Orange Party Master of Disguise. You have one vote. You can talk with the other members of your party privately any time. During the Night you choose a victim with your party members. If you are investigated or removed at any point of the game, your role will be shown as the same as your previous target. By default, you are disguised as a simple Gold Party Member.
Cricket. You must find that Floran. They lied to you, betrayed you, and attempted to outright kill you! ...What do you mean, they're on your team this game?

Your name is Ozcar Enwalde. You're of a race known as the Oscura.
You're a Purple Party Resilient. You have one vote. You can talk with the other party members privately any time. During the Night you choose a victim with your confederates. You can survive one blackmail attempt.
You are practically made of shadows. There's no one shadier-looking than you. Unfortunate, but at least "Aunt Syd" gave you something to sorta compensate for that. She knows you're not really bad at heart, even though you enjoy taking on the role of the villain onstage.

    Your name is Baryn Bartow.
You're a Purple Party Investigator. You have one vote. You can talk with the other party members privately any time. During the Night you choose a victim with your confederates. Every night, you can choose one player and find out their side.
Bartow is your name, and cards are your game. This game, however, really isn't like any game you've seen before. Are you any good at it? Well, we'll see.

    Finale:

    The Finale

"Everyone, get out of here," Syd ordered. Most everyone obeyed. Three people did not.

Silent Hikaru remained seated, staring straight at Cricket. Cricket recognized him now. He had been in the first game he'd hosted. He'd been the Cultist. And Cricket had thought he was dead.

Halo stood up, pushing her chair out. "Cricket. We need to go, now."

Syd looked at Hikaru (was that even his real name?), and he looked back at her. "You won't want to be here," he warned.

    "Where exactly is here?"

    "Anywhere in this building."

Syd raised the alarm. An evacuation was in order.

Halo and Cricket fled toward the docking bay they'd left Halo's ship in, pursued by Hikaru. Suddenly, Hikaru stopped. Neither of them knew why, but they weren't going to let this opportunity go to waste. They ran.

Cricket and Halo entered the wide-open space of the docking bay, but their attention was focused on the figure, clad in Glitch armor, who blocked their way.

"You're not going anywhere," Cuda hissed.

"Watch me." Halo pulled a cord on her vest, activating a smokescreen, as she picked up Cricket and ran to her ship.

Frantically, they made preparations for launch. They barely made it before the explosion ripped through the building. Hikaru had set it off. Cuda had planted it.

"Fern!" Cricket realized. "We left him behind!"

"I'm sure he's safe," Halo assured him. "He's got to be on one of the other ships that escaped."

"You're wrong." Cuda stood in the doorway suddenly, holding a pistol that belonged to Cricket. She smiled behind her mask. "I got to him first. It was surprisingly easy, you know. The Human was more than willing to let "Aunt Berry" see him for a few minutes."

    "You didn't!"

Halo, meanwhile, had her hand calmly upon one of the controls. "Don't you know this is a Penguin ship?"

Cuda realized what she must mean. A simple way to get rid of unwanted intruders. She stepped back, hoping to avoid the trapdoor...

And her foot slipped right into it.

Struggling to stay up, she aimed the pistol the best she could, but her shot missed its target and ultimately, she fell.

Cricket stared at the trapdoor even after it had closed, hand gripping the seat so tightly it left a mark, even after Halo had convinced him to get up and led him to bed.

The Penguin Syndicate is based on the well-known game of Forum Mafia.
In this Starbound-themed variation players are divided into Civilians, Penguins and various other groups.
Play all the tricks and mind-games you have; scheme and deduct your way into victory.
    The last team alive wins!

The Penguin Syndicate [game number] is a strategic roleplay forum game based on the game of Mafia. The rules to the game are explained below. They may seem complicated at first, but in practice the game is fairly simple. At the simplest, there are two teams: the Civilians (majority) and the Penguins (minority). In order to win, a team must get rid of all the other teams.

Sites providing a more in-depth introduction into the game:
    Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_(party_game)
MafiaWiki, a wiki for a Mafia-dedicated forum, but still a good resource for learning: http://wiki.mafiascum.net/

Interested in joining, but still doubtful? Just do it! This isn't that serious. Difficulty is not a concern. You learn the game as you play.
If you suddenly mid-game don't have the time to participate, don't worry. I'm not kicking anyone out of the game, but activity is encouraged. Also, if you desire to leave the game at any point just note me and I'll take care of it.

The game ain't dead-serious. Silliness inbound.

      • If there is a tie, there will be no lynch.
    • You can't choose yourself as a target for your night action, unless specified otherwise in the role description.
      • Stargazer Priests can target themselves, given that there are at least two of them. However, the targetted Stargazer does no action, and the action is performed by other Priests.
      • Alpaca's Victory or Loss has no effect on the outcome of the whole game.

It's all connected somehow. Has to be. Must be. Needs to be. Will be. With more aggressive interrogation methods, you can find out if your target has any partners.

    Ranger

Your knowledge is far beyond a ordinary lawman. Your special perception allows you to detect actions that others do on your target.

    Sentinel

As the law of your town, you keep watch. And as you're an adamant officer of the law, every town is your town. You will see everyone who does actions on your target, but not what actions they do.

    Warden

The years spent on duty have trained your eyes and ears as keen as possible so you can ... hey wait, what eyes and ears!? You're able to know the latest action and who did it at any moment, but only once per a Day/Night cycle. (Does not reveal who was the target of the action)

    Regal

Who knows.

    Priest

You are bound to the spiritual life stronger than a normal believer. Thus, you will be able to protect any player with other Stargazers every night. However, if any Stargazer dies, the others will meet the same fate.

    Loyalist

You want to make things right, and you have all the equipment to do so. Still, you know that if you make a wrong call and attack a friend, there will be no return... If you kill a Civilian, you die.

    Mad

You've got all the toys you could ever need. And everyone around you is undoubtedly incompetent. Why not use them yourself and unleash the full potential or these creations? Instead of giving the abilities away, you use them yourself.

    Killer Plant

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. You will automatically kill anyone that targets you with any action, but only once.

You hear voices, whispers and screams. Horrible visions flash in your dreams. It would've been better not to use that drysap, but it's too late for regret now. Paranoid of every movement, you will attack everyone that gets close to you. The rage will disappear at some point... possibly if you get something or someone to vent it on.

    Role idea by @zeskorion

    Novakid Bandit

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. Every night, you can steal a vote from someone and use it on the following day.

    Occultist-Bot

You are sided with the Civilians. You have one vote. You can talk with the dead privately any time.

Pull out the cards, the crystal balls and the ouija boards, because you're a spirit specialist! Everything you've learned of the ghastly ghosts is now being put into a test because you're reaching far to the Beyond in hopes of invaluable clues. How's it possible? Nanomachines! Not even death can stop you! Well, unless you're dead yourself.

    Divine

Not only are you innocent and pure, but you are the Chosen One as well. If you die, you will be granted a second life. On the next morning after your death, you will be resurrected.

    Persuader

You crook. Nothing is evil enough for you. Your influence even extends to the day as you convince a victim to give their support to you, so you can use their vote to your own goals.

    Role idea by @The Squid

    Spy

From the shadows you watch the events taking place, steepling your flippers. Anything there is, you'll be able to know it. You're able to know the latest action and who did it at any moment, but only once per a Day/Night cycle. (Does not reveal who was the target of the action)

    Role idea by @zeskorion

    Protector

Not all black-hearted creatures of the Dark Side are here to bring death and destruction. You support your Syndicate-associates via other means. Every night, you can choose another penguin to protect from all harm.

    Trooper

As an armored servant of the Syndicate, you have enough armor to survive a single murder attempt.

You specialize in finding out the identities of people - dead people, to be exact. Being a hardy investigator yourself, you also know how to hide all evidence from others. If your target dies on the same night, their role will not be revealed publicly, and only to you. You can use this ability once.

    Disguiser

As the King, you do have skills that earned you that position. With the trusty old disguise kit of yours, you can assume the role of your target. If you are investigated or killed during the night, your role will be shown as the same as your target.

    Role idea by @Apathy Applied

    Master of Disguise

Your prowess as a Disguiser has earned you the title of a master. Therefore, you have become the king of the kings. If you are investigated or killed at any point of the game, your role will be shown as the same as your previous target. By default, you are disguised as a Boring Human.

    Enforcer

As a soldier serving the true order of this universe you must make the heathens believe, one way or another. The one way they die in is definitely the right one. The equipment your lords have given to you protect you from one murder attempt.

    Hidden

Your dark views and eldritch overlords aren't widely accepted. Why make noise about the beliefs you'd get killed for? Your devotion remains a secret and thus investigative roles have no effect on you; the results are the same as if you were a Boring Human.

    Assassin

You serve your masters by eliminating high-profile heretics who oppose your faith. Thus, your proficiency in killing is unheard of. Nothing can stop you from killing your targets with one attempt.

    Arsonist

Burn the heathens! Dip them in gasoline, oil, erchius, or some other volatile liquid and let the flames consume them in the name of your lords. Every night you can either douse one player or ignite, which will kill all doused players at once.

    Chieftain

<Universal Translation error. Language not recognized. Attempting to parse.> (During Night, you can protect any Agaran from investigative roles.)

    Syndicate

The Alpaca Syndicate is something that shouldn't ever exist. Yet here it is. You better fix that quick. You have an ally, and both of you aim to be lynched. If one of you is nightkilled, the other has the following day to be lynched or both of you lose. If one is lynched, the other will be able to survive one nightkill attempt.

    Lynch & Votecount guide:
    • Terminology: wagon = a group of votes on a player
    • Stolen votes are inside brackets: [player]
    • If +50% of the players are voting on a wagon, it will become effective.
    • Changing votes afterwards won't affect an accepted result at all.
    • If the Day deadline is passed without the required amount of votes, one of these scenarios will take place:
      • The wagon with most votes will become effective.
      • If there is a tie, there will be no lynch.
      • If there are no votes at all, there will be no lynch.
    • Order of votes:
      • The player that has the oldest vote on the wagon is always the leftmost one.
      • Wagon with the most votes is always on the top.
      • If wagons have an equal amount of players, the newest wagon is on the top.
      • "Not Voting" is always above the wagons.
      • "No Lynch" is treated just like all the other wagons.

Oh, look what got put together while I was out. I'd definitely like to provide some notes for civilian protocol in the game, but considering that the citizens have done pretty well every game, I may not need to.

I wonder what would happen if we made role claiming against the rules (Accept for the dove) for one game...

Well, that won't really stop it (trust me we've tried it), but if you try and slow the rate of roleclaiming, then you might be better off.

I assume Dove is a named townie/innocent child?

@Zebe Last minute role idea. Maybe the only slightly good one I've ever managed to come up with.
    Miniknog Interrigator (Conspiricy Theorist)

They told you that you were crazy, how could you believe what you can't prove with science! But you know you're right, you'll show them, you'll expose everything and then they'll know. You were at some point an interrigator not only can you investigate someone, but you specialize in knowing if they have any partners.

If the Interrogator is able to investigate someone's alignment too, it's kinda useless to get to know whether or not they have partners. Penguins will always have, stargazers do but they are civvies so no worries. Only time it would be useful is with Agarans or the new Alpaca variant.
I think the alignment investigation ability should be removed from that variant. Knowing that someone has partners but not knowing their alignment is much more... suspenseful?

I just looked at my notes for game 2 and I'm laughing. These are not appropriate to describe this game. What the heck Karas. (Didn't even bother to record my death that time: I was the Cultist, so when I died, the game was over.)

My notes for game 3 are a lot more boring. They do have end of day votecounts, though.

I didn't even take notes for game 1.
