Which race to choose? Criteria, Variables, Wonderings.

This is a REAL problem of actual Starbound, the lore doesn't match with reactions. As an Hylotl player, I'm particularly annoyed by their selfish and haughty behavior.
And when you say you don't like the Hylotl ship, do you talk about the new one ? The old was totally ridiculous, but the new one is really cool !

I have choosen Hylotl because of all the "pacific" stuff, but sadly in their lore they look totally fearful ! Whatever, I still like the "samuraï" style (even if some armors are REALLY ugly).
In fact, I like most of race (except Florans because of their savagery and Human because of their... Humanity ?), so this is a real dilema every time that I start another character (I'm one of those who stay two hours on each character creation, or restart an early game because, finally, the second name idea was much way better). This is why I read everything about the lore when I can, this make the choice easier (but I have a special feeling with Hylots ! ).

heh That's the point of OP's questions: "How hard is it for you to choose?" (apparently for you, the answer is "not at all") and "What criteria do you use to make the choice?" Even if it's just rolling dice or going with whatever you happen to accidentally click first, that's still criteria.

Think most people into the game plan on playing all the races to at least some extent. heh Maybe someone can start a "which races do you refuse to play?" thread, haven't seen one of those yet.

I will not make a lot of character beacues playing with one on the unfinished game took me 100h so playing with more characters would be insane and some parts would be repeating the same stuff [unless they would share one base, but still not].

@AstralGhost - Thanks. My story, my rules and I shouldn't constrict myself, rather I should try to find all the good pieces. Also, mods are the answer indeed I forgot that I used to use them with other games in the past, and as you say I can tailor them to my story to change a lot of factors leting me choose the best race and best experience. Still won't be easy [choosing race, mods, time when to use them] but it will be freeing

@Lloyd Larsen - Reading this thread I though of a way around that incosiistancy. Coments of your character are a part of him, and a way of his people. His actions and what he thinks are yours to controll so he don't have to be arrogant Hyotl even if he talks things like that from time to time My Floran can be just joking about stabbing while I can collect books with him and never stab a person And I was talking about the old red fish ship, I don't know the new one.

After all that I think that number of factors is smaller.
Ship can be moded, Armour can be crafted, Bonuses are changable, racial comments are just a part of it.
Now the big things will be racial story, and relation/interactions with the word when implemented.

"New" Leaders on the board.
For now I think I will go Avian for the starting ship, and escaping religion [cool look not bad interactions].
Or Apex for a lot of things. And he will just have to change ship
But everything is subject to change in the future. More variables to come.
Maby Hyotl because the whole peace thing? And I don't know Novakid yet

 

Oh, just to note.
I found the reference and confirmation to 'racial traits' being turned into armor-bonuses only and not tied to the race itself.
So it is true that any race can get any of the other races' bonuses simply by buying their blueprints.

This was a year ago, so I assume that they didn't change their minds a second time. But I'm pretty sure this is the way they will go, and the nightlies show this is the way they are moving forward.

 

A Floran can have a mushroom head. That was all it took for me to choose... At least until Novakids with their space trains are out.

 

Any race can have a mushroom head. You just need to kill some Agarans.

O went for Apex, just mostly because of the rebelish background story of the character.

The ships looks kinda meh.... the armor is simply the worse.

 

I went for human. Its the hair choice that drives me nuts, there's so many to choose from..

 

I think my last choice would be Human, simply because I am a human (or am I?) Or Hylotl, because they're self centered and obnoxious.

 

Ship is a tough cookie.
I found fully upgraded ships of Human, Floran, Hyotl and Novakid [Human and Floran had all levels shown].
But still not apex, glitch and avian. And avian one can go full Star Gate pyramid or other cool option.
I think humans have a great upgrade design, so if I don't take humans I maby mod their ship
What is cool is that Floran use tech from few races as the lore sugested:
Apex ship skeleton, Human thrusters, Glitch cannons, Avian temple.

What more important is.
For now there are no racial/cultural quests or interactable events in the world based on that.
But there are still comments from people we meet that are tied to that cultural background.
Is there a list of all things that each race say to each other?
For example all things that Avian character can hear from Glitch, from Avians etc.
Same things about obsarvational comments that a character make.
A list made by dedicated fan or taken out from game files would be good.
If there is nothing of the sort is there someone whou would describe the tone of interactions with few quotes?

Because as I said this is one of the more important things in choosing race for me.
Of course with the story and more culture based interactions, dialogues, behaviour and events it will be more important.

 

Why all the hate for humans, hehe. My first character was human. And the ponex race is heavily human related. As in... they are literally descended from humans.
Be proud of our race. Our stupidity and love for violence and conflicts rivals the Krogans.

I read everything besides the racial histories but since I have colected those books I will read it in this more organised form.
The first thing to say is: Hylotl are dicks. Oh boy such pricks.
I'm leaning more to "grounded" Avian then to anything.
Second is Apex and Human third.

For now I'm satisified with that choice
Also If I make a home in the first sector then each future character can go there and take what he needs.
Which will make playing multiple character an option. But firstly an grounded avian, who try to find his fate amoung the stars

P.S.
I would like to like Hylotls beacuse of their peacfull ways, but they didn't find a higher way of life just a higher way of thinking about themselves and their way of life. Not enough understanding too much condescending.

Glitch castle looks really impresive, one of the coolest ships for sure.
Apex ship grows from plain an simple into a Miniknogs monstrosity.
Avian ship which starts as the most impresive tier one ship, isn't that cools at third tier. [But still is]
Floran and Hylotl ships are good but not amazing.

Best ship award in my opinion, goes to Humans. - They may have boring little one pixel eyes and be just funny cowards in space, but that ship is the best thing.

About ship, I think it depend of anyone predilection. It's good to have the choice !

I tend to go for humans because any other race have those racial perks that I feel are kinda unfair.
I find that overcoming the odds without any "natural" gifts to be rather valorous.

Also their ship is the sleekiest IMO.

That said, I fully intend to roll a glitch sporting novakid gear for vanity.
