That's more like it! How about the stone axes and others? Rare drops? Be sold in extremely limited quantities by stone-aged "programmed" Glitch guys? Or Overpriced at the Penguin Bay?

    Interesting. Do change the 1x1 MM when you do that though! ; ;

having the MM be your mining tool is gonna be wired

i hope atlest make it easyer to mine cus having it be 1x1 intill you get 8 copper bars would be anooying as hell

then again its already odd to have the MM at all if pickaxes and drills exist

Hm. I'm pretty good with this. I'm ambivalent on the "utterly unrepairable" angle, but that does hinge on how well the ol' MM comes across.

Of course, this begs the question as to how this affects that "weaker pick will destroy ores" deal, and if the MM will have the same limitations on what it can mine until it's upgraded.

Yay! I always hated this one thing in starbound. *Game is set in Future space traveling time Sci Fi* *Still uses a pickaxe even though a WAY cooler mining tool is given to you at the start of the game* I mean. That was just dumb. Also. What about adding something like a mining laser? Mines fast and has an incredible range but is not very good at precision mining.

Sounds like mining won't be so stupidly annoying now. Really glad to hear, this music to my ears.

I like this. Does open up a whole range of disposable mining items... plus more incentive to use those bombs I've been hoardi-

"Unrepairable" and "pointless to use whatsoever, but might have the possibility of being slightly better than your current manipulator level" don't sound exactly like a "trade-off" to me, honestly.

What is being made up for? Which one is making up for the other? I honestly can't tell.

If they're like dynamite in slow motion, I might as well just use the manipulator. It might take longer, but it's less inconvenient to not have to go through my inventory to use that Special Mass Of Blocks that I will never think about again.

Don't mind me, I'm being crotchety and old—but I do find it odd that something that was once a core part of the gameplay is being made so monstrously obsolete.

I don't know why - but that just sounds silly.
A pickaxe more powerful than a matter manipulator and a rare drop to boot?

I would understand for drills - but pickaxes?
I think the best solution is a midway

    Early Game - Pickaxes
Mid Game - Matter Manipulator Upgrades
    End Game - Drills

The reason matter manipulator is midgame - is MM provides the advantage of long range + light. Drills counter balance that with speed. Which allows MM remain as a specialist tool.

    ==============
Also it would be nice if "harvestLevel" : could be defined on materials - and not just "matmods".
Or something like "harvestGroup" where a particular group of tiles can be mined by a specific tool. Which allows the possibility of creating structures which cannot be destroyed without the proper tool at hand. Yet this tool can also would not be retroactive to previous groups. But only specific groups.

But, it's being made obsolete to be replaced in that role by

1- A tool that does the same thing only with greater versatility (sweet, sweet range), and
B- A tool that is visually and thematically unique to Starbound

That second point is pretty critical, I think. That I can waltz into just about any store with a toy department anymore and buy a foam Minecraft pickaxe says to me "maybe let's move away from pickaxes as your primary digger so's to stand out a wee bit more."

honestly, in the nightly the unbalanced mater manipulator is fine, but the big problems are you can't fix tools and the pick axe disappears at 0 durability.
I seem to remember it was promised it would not disappear but just dull

well if your just replacing the pick ax completely than the only problem is as it stands the air pack dose not work

ps. restricting teleportation from the pad to airless planets dose nothing when using the hot button circumvents it

Honestly to me this feels a bit more of a drawback than a plus. Allow the matter manipulator to be upgradable, and leave picks as they are. Alternate upgrade paths are good! Besides, drills are already there too (please don't break repairing/using those, the area affect change was really nice with the drawback of needing to repair or not workin' so good) to give yet more variety. Let the matter manipulator have a better reach or summat, but the picks don't need that hard of a nerfbat? I dunno, it seems a bit of a negative change from this angle.

Couldnt you just make the matter manipulator require energy to mine? That would keep picks as a viable alternative and the matter manipulator only something for weaker/lower level blocks, or when doing adjustments during building.

I'm still hoping for a particle beam drill of sorts to be added.

YEAH! Why not a particle beam drill? 200 energy points, 1 shot, 6 x 30 block-range, the cooldown is triple the sword blocking recovery time.

Thank goodness. I hate the pickaxe grind. I hope you will introduce more modes to the MM though. I saw a mining laser suggestion up there somewhere.

    Would be cool.

Maybe drills could dig far more quickly than the MM, but they destroy a certain percentage of ores, or they are just unable to mine them. The MM has a fancy-futury-ore-extraction technology, while the drill was made for speed and just mashes the ores to pieces.

    Thank Gods,
I've disliked the concept of a pickaxe in this game for the longest time. It felt like it was more or less here to represent an idea, versus actually being canonically useful.
Besides, Drills are so much cooler anyways, and honestly lugging around items like stone axes and pickaxes occupy extra inventory slots on top of your matter manipulator.

As far as I can see, this is a positive change indeed.
