What Do You Actually "Do" In Starbound?

I've been following Starbound's development from the very start, and I think it has an immense amount of potential. But one thing has always bothered me whenever I looked over photos or watched live streams of the game; What do you actually do? Aside from building and exploring, as well as the main missions of the game, what do you occupy your time with? For example, in Terraria the main time consumer was mining, something that was essentially the base mechanic of the game. In Starbound there has been little to no information on mining (From what I have seen, correct me if i'm wrong) besides using the building tool to remove blocks. Obviously the game is not built around mining aspects. So, from this I am just wondering what are you supposed to actually do in a game like Starbound? I understand building is something to do, but what about those who aren't builders? Fight off endless monsters? Explore the endless universe?

I feel as though I have answered my own question, but I would like to get other's opinions on this.

I didnt mine the majority of time in terraria ...
Essentially those games are sandbox games and YOU decide what you "actually do" most of the time.
You can kill enemies all day if you want to or your build a shiny home, whatever it is you enjoy there.

    Edit:
Initially i would spend most of the time in mining, then fighting enemies will become increasingly important and finally fighting + crafting + building a home will waste most of the time endgame i guess.
    And of course modding! :p

    This is true I suppose.

On an unrelated note, I fucking love your picture.

  5. I'd assume in Starbound, the emphasis will be more on exploring -- it'll take the place of mining. So instead of mining a vein of ore, you'd find an abandoned outpost and loot it. Or something.

That's the best part of Starbound: DO WHAT YOU WANT!

I'm gonna do stacks of Bacon, an underground and an underwater base, a flying fortress and a statue of myself too.

Oh... and I'll try to explode a planet too!

  7. I believe the implicit goal of any sandbox game is to play out your own narrative, whether you choose adventuring, exploration, creativity or conquest.

e.g. "I first arrived here back in '64, with nothing but a fish and a pair of boots. Then I found a temple and converted it into a casino. One of these days I will be the Pokemon Master."

There's gonna be a story to the game, too, so I'd imagine that will occupy a lot of time.

I would just throw myself in caves and go treasure hunting, most exciting if you ask me. This topic also raised a question for me though, do monsters actually drop stuff? And are drops random, or do different types of monsters also drop their own type of stuff? Haven't seen any info on that. If that's the case then looking for monsters with particular drops might be interesting as well.

  11. I don't think that there is going to be one main focus only - there will be several and players may choose which ones they'd like to deploy more attention into. For instance, player A may prefer staying put and developing his/her building skills, while Player B would rather establish Floran farms across the universe. It'll all depend on the individual, which is a great thing, actually, since everyone's Starbound experience will be unique. ^^

However, as mentioned, a great factor here is exploring, since this is a sandbox game that takes place in Space. :) Finding new planets, new biomes, new creatures, new crafting patterns, new settlements, etc. will all be elements that will very likely revolve around Starbound players.

Anyways, here's a short list of generic Starbound activities: :rainbow:
    - Exploring
    - Mining
    - Building
    - Crafting new equipment
    - Hunting wild creatures
    - Farming
    - Cooking
    - Fighting other sentient species
    - Trading
    - among many others. ^^

You will be able to go Mining and hunting animals. You can explore the nearly infinite amount of planets, or do the Story quests.

You can build, farm, tame creatures, craft new items, or go play on a server for cooperative or PvP play.

In order to hopefully answer your question, answer this one:

As a little kid, you sit in a sandbox in the back yard. There is undoubtedly a massive amount of sand along with twigs, leaves, acorns, small and scattered ant colonies, toy tonka trucks, random spaceship toys, and your trusty shovel and pail. The box seems endless and is capable of holding more people, and you have the whole summer to do whatever you'd like with it. What do you do? ;)

There is no right or wrong answer. Starbound is a sandbox; Just gotta get out there and dig in it, and before long you will find your reason of playing it.

Because I am a very focused person, I usually set multiple goals and pursue only one at a time.
I plan on reaching top tier with each race, then building up an awesome home world.
After that I'll probably work on adding content to the game in some sort of mod package.

Well i really hope they keep some kind of element of mining ores then smelting/refining... I allways love that about sandbox games but to be honest i think chucklefish will keep the mining ores system in but they will put there own new unique spin on it what i think is great if they do because it will make starbound stand out from the rest i.e terraria, minecraft. thanks
