What do you guys think the Starbound Community's reaction will be?

Discussion in 'Starbound Discussion' started by TheGamer100, Aug 21, 2014.

  1. I think you feel this way because so far you feel victimized by moderation, but it doesn't seem like you've approached moderation actions from a moderation point of view for context -- which is why a lot of people have issue with your opinion

To everyone: Keep it cool guys, the reports on this thread doubled in the last 40 minutes or so. Be mindful about your posts and try to be respectful and polite.

Exactly! It's not like they weren't trying to get it done by 2013, they didn't lie to us on purpose. They work full time on the game, maybe even more sometimes. You can't ask much more than that.

To be fair to the Steam Forums, the numbers of locked threads is nowhere near the critical mass of a month ago.

Perhaps the old saying "While the cats away, the mice will play" was an apt description of Steam Forums. Is it not strange that since the developers returned to engage steam buyers, there has been a marked reduction in locked posts, and flame wars?

  4. Just to iterate further on this...

The more reasonable a thread is (even with negative criticism) the more likely a dev will join the conversation. Hard to call a thread reasonable with tons of flaming going on.

Well, if I can expand. The period that the developers were not as active, shall we say, created a vacuum where flamers and trolls prospered. I think if you browse this area now, you can see that those forums are somewhat cleaner now. It seems as though, with the increased participation of developers, many of the trolls have ceased operations.

Some of the newer posters there have helped create a better dynamic. That is what I have been trying to engender since I have been there this past month or so.

Well, I think the OP asked exactly for opinions, not for facts...

But I might aswell agree he is probably very accurate with his prediction.

It's a sad thing what happened to Starbound. The game could have been so much bigger... But I am still sure that in the end, those who stay around will have a very fun toy to play with when it eventually gets released.[DOUBLEPOST=1408722131][/DOUBLEPOST]
I disagree. They mean a lot. The conversation "got too heated" because there was something "hot" to discuss which was somehow sensored.

If there are many "hot" things sensored, there is for sure a clear divergence between line of thinking of gamers, devs, modders, moderators, etc... And this, instead of being explored, is being buried. Different opinions being buried (especially those between producers and consumers) means definitely something.

EDIT: Double post automatic scripts somehow merged my first post with answer to the user Litagano below me...

Locked threads don't mean much. Usually, they get locked because the conversation got too heated, and the mods don't want to let it go on.

There are plenty of heated conversations that do not center around gameplay or Starbound features. Many of the "heated" conversations center around Chucklefish or expectations of Early Access.

I think the most heated gameplay topics have been: Glitch AI, racial differences/features, and melee vs ranged combat. And most of the threads about these topics? Still open.

[doublepost=411]OH YEAH[/doublepost]Also, yes, doublepost automerging is a thing. See?

  9. Nothing get's "censored" (I'm still unsure how that's a thing)
We delete posts that REALLY cross the line. It's one thing to call someone "stupid", we can leave that up and publicly warn for stuff like that -- but when something is like "[every cuss word in the book]", we can't leave something that volatile and spiteful up. We also delete gore and porn. Negative things about [subject] stay visible so long as they don't make children's eyes bleed.

Most threads get overly heated, not because the subject is "hot discussion" :giggle: but because someone will come in and present misinformation or opinions as facts -- and that leads to quoting out of context, insults, reports, blah blah blah.

That is the heart of the problem in one sentence. Spot on :)

One of my all-time favourite pointless statements is "Developers stole my money". As in, they logged into PayPal and took the money without consent?

There are valid complaints, sure, but "scam" and "thieves" are not words that can be used outwith an opinion. There are no "facts" in those posts. They degenerate into the same arguments time and time again.

I forgive them, but I am talking about what other people might think, if CF doesn't make this update good, then I really think this game will lose lots of popularity.

I do agree. Which is why I think they are doing all the massive rewrite stuff rather then just like finishing the AI, novakids, and Staffs and calling it an update. I mean I am not a real programmer but for me it seemed easier just to add new stuff then go back and change the coding on existing systems for better compliance, flexibility, or optimization when I would code. They are trying to so some redeeming mega update so then they can return to working as normal since the game will feel more like it is where it should be at this point it time.

Well, if they are changing something like damage, and they already made all the weapons and stuff, then it would be a hassle to go back to every single weapon, and rework it with the new system, but if you did the new system first, then you can make all the weapons without having to go back to them later. Right now though, i think the devs should be spending more time adding content, not optimizing. Sure, my pc heats to 90 degrees Celsius, but I want my damn content :p

Right now all there is to it is build a wooden shack, get some armor and sit around and do nothing.

Hehe, what is interesting is I have seen users post the oppostie of that which. Stuff like "I don't care the game is only 50 kinds of dirt, i want a game that runs at more then 20fps more then a game with 2000 new items that I can't use because my CPU is on fire".

They seem to be attempting to please a lot of people at once by adding new stuff, optimizing the game some, making it more moddable, and a bunch of other tweaks. Saddly each one ticks off the other (saw the same thing in minecraft, redstone changes are pointless for survivalist, survival changes are pointless if you are an engineer, and both those are useless if you just recrate castles and don't need more enemies or compacted logic gates) because well, the rest is of no interest to you at this point.

On a more comic note, wasn't "armor up, build a shack, and just wait" literally how you played minecraft in the beginning (around aplpha). Personally I built a hole in wall of some dirt, then started an art gallery way back when, then dug into the earth, mined ore, built the armor and waited (and this was back before hunger, I only needed food to heal and only needed to heal if I stepped outside, so I could just sit in a minecraft and wait if I wanted).

for me starbound is not a beta, the game is finished.
after waiting 4 month in silence, i don't hope for a new update, or for real i don't care
mods complete extremely well the game

I would say the Starbound version for "heated" is more of a "luke warm, possibly even up to body temperature". People don't get upset because threads are locked when people start cursing others out or just straight up insulting people directly.

But you and I know that just isn't the case with most threads.

Back on topic, the amount of players playing StarBound on Steam is set to reach less than 1k concurrent players during non-peak hours soon. Does anyone think Starbound can return to popularity? 99% of your player base is a lot of people to lose.

    I do.

What bothers me about those figures being posted all the time is that the don't seem that accurate. The launcher - for me anyway - counts when I playing the game, despite my NOT playing the game. Do you have to link to a different .exe to launch the game outwith the launcher. I think those figures may not be as accurate as we all think.

Doesn't really make any difference though, with updates will be large spikes and then the same decay. At least until launch of 1.0 anyway :)

People will think no differ, and then start to complain about the next update, Juice Box has seen it all before.

Kinda, no where near the full 100%, there are too many people who are not forever embittered towards CF (Pretty much anyone who has been banned from here will likely hate CF forever). But I would not imagine all 99% are lost, I have some friends who don't play now a days but have not said "I will never play this again". We will never get back to the original number completely. But maybe close to it then the current number.
