Well, they did say that they are trying to get in as much stuff as they can for the beta, so I'm thinking sometime next month or maybe the beginning of December, with the full release in February.

 

They stated that Beta should definitely be out before 2014, so quite possible finishing up before beta release.

I am led to believe that there are over 50 posts throughout the thread that are just like this one. No one can convince me otherwise.

If you are willing to spend that amount of money, then yes, I say go for it.
X and Y are definitely worth it, as you could easily put over 100 hours into. This includes the main story, filling your Pokedex, playing with your Pokemon to raise their affection, doing other stuff relating to your character themselves (customizing appearances, making your trainer video thing, etc.), and so much more.
Also, there are a lot more games other than Pokemon that you might want to look into, so you're not just buying a 3DS for Pokemon.

And as far as getting those specific Pokemon on your team, getting either a Squirtle or Charmander is easy, but whichever one you get you'll most likely have to trade with someone to get the other. And Machops and Abras shouldn't be too difficult to find.
